The northwestern region of Piedmont, in the foothills of the Alps, is one of Italy’s very best wine-growing districts. Styles made range from the lightest of whites through sweet sparklers to thundering reds of great longevity. There are up to 15 distinct DOC’s located within the larger region of Piedmont producing dozens of different varietals.
The quality of the wine matches the quality of the experience. The region is crossed by several Alpine streams flowing into the Po River which originates in the region of Piedmont. It’s a stunningly beautiful area stretched on the buttress of a great Alpine arc. The two best red wines from this region are Barolo and Barbaresco, both of which have villages within Piedmont named after them. Some of the other excellent varieties produced here include Nebbiolo, Chardonnay, Arneis, Asti, Spanna, Moscato, Barbera, Brachetto, Dolcetto, Fresia, and Grignolino.
